Friday hero

8th September 2000, 1:00am
We sent four bouquets to round off last term to people who’ve made a huge difference to school life. First, Tony Turner, who retired from Hartcliffe School, Bristol, after 34 years, the last 14 as head. Inspiring and dedicated, we trust he had a brilliant send-off. Next Melanie Szostak, head of drama, Year 8 leader, PSE and ICT co-ordinator at Almondbury high school, Huddersfield, who is moving to head a lower school in Morley. Two other nominations were irresistible: Sheila Smale, whose highly efficient team a the London borough of Enfield organises work experience for all Year 10s and seems to satisfy everyone, and Mrs Muriel Seed, a volunteer at Longridge CE primary school in Preston. “Every school should have a Granny Seed,” says class teacher Mary Cook.

Please send the name of your Friday Hero - and why he or she should get a bouquet - to Sarah Bayliss, TES Friday, Admiral House, 66-68 East Smithfield, London E1W 1BX, or e-mail sarah.bayliss@tes.co.uk. Flowers kindly supplied by Marks and Spencer
