Frill seekers

Councils struggling with balancing the books last week had to put the best possible spin on their efforts. None more so than in East Dunbartonshire where departments were facing the prospect of a 15 per cent cut. In the event, the education budget was shaved by a mere 1.6 per cent. Funny that.

Last year, when Labour ruled in Greater Bearsen, council leader Charles Kennedy described the budget settlement as “one for growth”.

Now with a Liberal Democrat-Tory admininistration in charge of Lesser Milngavie, council leader Keith Moody, not to be outdone, suggested the committee had come up with a “no frills budget”. Any surviving frills are invited to get in touch.
