THE IDEA that dyslexia can still be defined as “having verbal difficulties” (TES, October 29) is surely both outdated and simplistic.
Many gifted writers have had varying degrees of early verbal difficulties from Jane Austen to the scriptwriter Lynda la Plante. My own view is that dyslexia and allied conditions are a form of giftedness, not a problem.
Unfortunately the national curriculum has become a hurdle when we should be seeking ways to bring out the best in all our children.
