Give us a break from this holidays myth

4th May 2012, 1:00am

I read with interest the letter from the “school business manager” who works a 60-hour week (“Fifty hours’ work is not unusual”, TES, 20 April), rebukes teachers for complaining about their 50-hour weeks, then ends with a comment about 13 weeks’ holiday. I spend much of my time arguing with friends and family about this supposed 13 weeks’ holiday. Taking into account essential marking and planning, I rarely get four weeks. I wish people like “school business manager” would drop the idea that 13 weeks’ holiday is an excuse to bash teachers.
