The job of funding councils is to dish out cash, not to dictate what is taught where, says the Higher Education Funding Council for England in its latest missive to Alan Johnson, the Secretary of State for Education.

“HEFCE cannot and should not attempt to prescribe where subjects should be provided, or to interfere in proper institutional decisions about their strategic direction” - said an HEFCE letter to Mr Johnson.

So, the same goes for FE, does it? Er... not quite.

“As part of our drive to refocus funding on the government’s priorities for adult learning, the Learning and Skills Council has been reviewing with colleges and providers, the volume and balance of provision.” - LSC paper on funding priorities.
