It is appropriate that the proposed national framework for religious education should identify a broad field of study. Current good practice embraces diversity and recognises non-religious philosophies of life: it must do so in order to be relevant to pupils’ own concerns and interests.
Christianity will continue to be the main religion studied in classrooms; other major religions should continue to be taught in as much depth as possible Good RE encourages respect for the beliefs that are a powerful force in people’s lives. A national framework that enhances its effectiveness will be welcome. Developing such a document demands care and it is regrettable that it should be scrutinised before it is fully shaped.
