Golf course

When our leaders said they wanted all children to do two hours of sport a week, they were probably thinking football and hockey. But one school has opted for something slightly more sedate. Pupils at Sandon high school, Stoke-on-Trent, have turned their backs on muddy pitches and are building their own golf course instead.

The Year 10 and 11 pupils have already drawn up designs and cut holes. Next come tee boxes and a fundraiser for a sit-on mower to keep the fairways tidy. An opening ceremony, complete with European Tour professional, is planned for next March.

The five-hole short course will be for local children who fancy themselves as the Tigers of tomorrow. Rumours of a plus-fours dress code are yet to be confirmed.
