Guidance for the gifted

10th June 2005, 1:00am
London Gifted Talented aims to encourage the top 10 per cent of students in the 33 London boroughs, focusing especially on those from disadvantaged backgrounds. They provide resources, training and guidance for teachers working with gifted and talented students as well as the students themselves and their parents. Currently on the Learning Zone of the site are two sections called “In Between the Lines” and “Deep Cells”. “In Between the Lines” provides a series of challenging reading and writing exercises for key stage 3 English students. Five activities take them through topical subjects such as the impact of advertising, freedom of information and homelessness using interactive online tools. A teacher’s page gives guidance for using the exercises. “Deep Cells” sets out to encourage key stage science students to think about science rather than just learn the facts. Activities about amoeba and parts of the body are included with guidance about planning and delivering for teachers. Also on this site is a section called Teacher Tools. This offers advice for teachers on how to identify, provide for and monitor gifted and talented students. www.londongt.org
