A St Andrews University historian has been honoured by the Saltire Society for his research into Scotland in the Viking age.
History lecturer Alex Woolf was awarded the Scottish History Book of the Year title for the first book in 20 years on the destruction of the Picts. From Pictland to Alba 789-1070 examines the mysterious disappearance of the Picts and their language, and the sudden rise of Gaelic-speaking Scots. The other shortlisted author was Michael Brown, for Bannockburn: The Scottish War and the British Isles, 1307-1323.
