An 18-year-old pupil from Eastwood High in East Renfrewshire has been named the top home economics student in Scotland.

Amanda Gillooly was the highest scoring pupil in the 2008 home economics Higher examination, which was sat by almost 800 students. Amanda’s achievement was made all the more impressive as she suffers from a rare muscle weakness condition. At a special ceremony at Eastwood High in Newton Mearns, Amanda received a Pounds 250 cash prize from Quality Meat Scotland, the red meat industry promotion body. Her school also received a Pounds 250 meat voucher to be used for home economics classes.
