* The Home Office has rejected claims that the Government is trying to take control of local police forces, after it was revealed that the 10 chief constables in areas of high street crime are making weekly progress reports to ministers on the Prime Minister’s Street Crime Action Group.

The group of 10 ministers includes Stephen Twigg, junior education minister, who is keeping tabs on progress in South Yorkshire.
