Hot tip for next chief inspector?

2nd June 2006, 1:00am
Ministers are preparing to appoint a new chief inspector of schools for England. Maurice Smith, the man who has held the fort since David Bell was elevated to chief panjandrum of the DfES, is retiring and his deputy Miriam Rosen has not applied. David Sherlock, head of the Adult Learning Inspectorate, has ruled himself out.

Another name that has cropped up however is Christine Gilbert, chief executive of Tower Hamlets. She shares Mr Bell’s new-Labour friendly local authority background and was recently appointed to conduct the Government’s review of personalised learning. No denial from her - she was not returning the Diary’s calls...
