Teachers’ pay would have to be raised by over 40 per cent to take it back to the levels set by the Houghton report in the mid-1970s, Jack Duffy salaries’ convener, told conference.
To raise it to the levels of the Main inquiry in 1987 would require a straight 15 per cent increase.
Mr Duffy said Scottish teachers’ salaries were not comparative with other professions. They were also falling further behind colleagues in England and Wales who enjoyed a 1.1 per cent increase over Scottish teachers in the past few years. “It’s not good enough to fight every ten years and to have one year of harvest and nine years of famine,” Mr Duffy said.
