THE education director of Hull, which has come bottom in the GCSE league table for the fourth year running, spoke publicly for the first time this week.
Joan Taylor has brushed aside a high-profile campaign, led by her local paper, for her to be sacked.
This week, she promised Kingston-upon-Hull City Council that there would be improvements “over the next few years”.
Ms Taylor pointed out that he city was on target to meet the Government’s targets for 11-year-olds in English and maths in 2002. She assured the committee there would be “significant” improvements as successful primary pupils went on to take GCSEs.
But efforts to transform the city’s schools depended on tackling truancy and making secondary schooling more attractive for children and parents, she said.
