Filler for the DIY knowledge gap
21st October 2011, 1:00am

A third of Britons cannot identify basic tools such as pliers and spanners. But Bamp;Q, in partnership with the National Schools Partnership, has stepped in to fill the DIY knowledge gap.

Students and teachers now have access to a series of lesson plans available for children as young as five on the Job Done! programme, which revolves around six units: Decorate It, Build It, Fix It, Grow It!, Health and Safety and Re-think. The aim is to improve the practical skills of young people.

Since launching for 11 to 14-year-olds last year, more than 1,000 secondary schools have signed up. Now, 650 primaries have also registered to download the lesson plans.

The programme is delivered through a teaching pack for schools and a complementary teacher website - www.diyjobdone.com - designed to dovetail with the national curriculum in Damp;T, maths, science and art.

Bamp;Q’s DIY classes for 7 to 11-year-olds are held at 15 stores. For details go to www.diy.comkidsclasses
