DESPERATE times call for desperate measures and a school advertising a maths teaching post is asking: “What salary do you want?” Westlands secondary in Sittingbourne, Kent, has been advertising for the post and for a pair of science teachers for three weeks. Alan Burchett, head, has been flooded with applications from overseas teachers but has had only three from teachers in the UK. He will not say how high a salary he would consider, but teachers will be invited to negotiate their pay, receive a pound;500 welcome bonus and a relocation package of up to pound;2,000. There will also be the possibility of at least one point on the pay scale.
