Increase in abortions

The number of abortions in England and Wales is increasing, with those for under-16s and under-18s rising faster than other age groups, new figures show. There were 193,700 terminations in 2006, compared with 186,400 in 2005, a rise of 3.9 per cent. Anne Weyman, chief executive of sexual health charity FPA, said the rise was not surprising “given that contraceptive services are in crisis and at their lowest point for many years”.
