Juggling incomes

Colleges have stepped up their campaign to win more support for the poorest students. Bursary officers and support staff from all 43 colleges met last week to find solutions to the disadvantages suffered by FE students. They have to juggle up to nine separate income streams, with the average HNCD student having to survive on a household income of Pounds 18,000. Almost a fifth of college students receive benefits, but many face cuts in their support simply because they are eligible for a student loan - even if they do not claim the loan.
