Kent is right to question Ofsted

I refer to Brian Meyer’s letter (“Kent is out of touch”, 15 March) questioning whether Mike Kent’s contributions “add to a serious debate” about Ofsted.

What “serious debate” about Ofsted are we supposed to be having? I haven’t noticed one. Frankly, it would be great to see any debate about the usefulness of Ofsted. As far as I can see, as a piece of government machinery, Ofsted does what it likes at enormous public expense, and its principal function appears to be deciding whether a school is any good from dubious data. Mr Kent is right to highlight its uselessness.
