Labour should roll back the state

23rd June 1995, 1:00am
Mr Patten’s reported wish in his lecture on Christian education to “keep the State in its box” comes oddly from a politician who, in his meteoric and self-destructive path across the skies of state education, took unprecedented powers for himself and his successors and hung the ill-informed prejudices of politicians like millstones around the necks of teachers and pupils for generations to come.

Mr Blunkett should take note that the enthusiasm of teachers for partnership with Labour will depend, in very large measure, on his willingness to roll back the state.
