Chattering classes

The European Day of Languages, first designated in 2001 by the Council of Europe, is taking place on September 26.

It aims to encourage the 800 million Europeans represented in the 47 member states to learn more languages, at any age, in and out of school. Various events are organised on the day, including activities for and with children, television and radio programmes, language classes and conferences.

The council’s dedicated website offers a number of games and quizzes to give pupils a taster of the various European languages. Teachers can join a special Facebook group to celebrate the day: l http:edl.ecml.atLanguageFunFacebooktabid1530languageen- GBDefault.aspx.
