Secondary schools in the European Union can now enrol for the second Juvenes Translatores (young translators) contest, launched by the European Commission in 2007 to promote language learning and translation.

Registration will be carried out in two different phases. Up until October 20, schools are invited to indicate their interest by submitting their contact information.

At the end of the registration period, a number of schools from each member state will be selected randomly. After the selection, the schools must communicate the names of up to four participating pupils who will then take on the challenge of the translation contest, to be held on November 27. They will then face the challenge of translating text from one language to another and the fundamental role of translation for the life of the EU.

The choice of language combinations among the 23 official EU languages is free - for example, from Polish into Romanian, or from Maltese into Finnish. On the day of the contest, an estimated 2,760 pupils from 690 schools will be given a short text to translate at the same time under school supervision. A panel of professional translators from the directorate-general for translation of the European Commission will evaluate the translated texts, and the contest jury will then choose the best translation from each member state. The 27 winners will be announced in January, 2009.
