Leaders’ African gap

8th August 2008, 1:00am

A scheme that sends headteachers on “gap years” to Africa is to be extended. The International Extended Placements scheme, funded by the National College for School Leadership, will place 14 heads, deputies and assistant heads in schools in Ghana, Nigeria, Namibia and Rwanda for three months from January 2009. In 2007, the Voluntary Service Overseas-run project placed eight heads and deputies in Rwanda and Namibia and a second group of six school leaders went to Africa earlier this year.
