Learning support

HMIE has published a new self-evaluation guide for schools on provision for bilingual learners as part of its inclusion and equality series.

The guide is intended for use by headteachers, senior managers, teachers, specialist EAL (English as an additional language) staff and education authority officers.

It includes a reminder that under the new Additional Support for Learning Act, bilingual learners can be included if they require additional support to that which might normally be provided in a school to ensure that they make good progress in their learning.

“Schools have a key role to play in maximising the potential of bilingual learners,” says the report.
