THE director of education in Leicester has resigned following the decision by ministers to appoint management consultants to advise on the improvement of the city’s education service.
Tom Warren announced his decision last week as an inspection report revealed that around a quarter of the city’s schools were failing or had serious weaknesses.
According to the Office for Standards in Education, the Leicester service lacks expertise in key areas and is not capable of performing all the functions required to raise standards in schools.
However, the inspectors acknowledge the scale of the task facing the new organisation would have been daunting for even the most experienced authority. Estelle Morris, the schools minister, is to appoint management consultants to draw up options for the future.
