Letters Extra : The real reason for pension changes

4th July 2003, 1:00am

The Government’s proposals to make teachers work until they are aged 65 is so clearly detrimental to the educational service that there has to be an agenda, other than simply reducing the time at which teachers start to draw their pensions.

Unfortunately that agenda is all too clear. Statistics show that the later a teacher retires, the sooner he or she dies! So. kill them off while they are still in service or, failing that, actively reduce their life expectancy by forcing them to endure more years in a stressful profession and you will not even have to start paying many of those pensions. Problem solved! Target met!
