Northfield Academy was host to the “Making it Happen in Aberdeen” conference on quality assurance. An impressive 300-strong audience waited anxiously to hear the Education Minister, lord provost, education convener and director of education spell out the good work.

As they twiddled thumbs waiting for the minister to arrive, the procedural void was broken by an administrative announcement. “Would the owner of a red Peugeot, please return to their car. They have left their lights on.” A sixth-year pupil from a neighbouring secondary sheepishly slunk off.
