Literacy is the goal

(Photograph) - Arsenal’s David Platt and England coach Terry Venables, above, join the National Literacy Trust’s poster campaign to encourage boys to read.

They agreed to take part in the initiative because they are keen readers and could provide the right influence as famous role models.

Since the campaign was launched in libraries and schools last March, teachers and librarians report that the initiative is working in “very practical ways”, according to the Trust’s director, Neil McClelland, who reports “more reading, more book borrowing and more book-buying”.

And they believe that posters in schools displaying these particular male readers will have a longer-term impact on boys’ reading habits. Posters are free from the Trust at lA Grosvenor Gardens, London SWlW OBD.
