On Sunday Maginnis, for it was she, delivered a New Testament reading for the kirking ceremony of Edinburgh Council at St Giles’ Cathedral. “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of the edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers,” Maginnis told the Ephesians via St Paul (chapter IV: verse 29).

They continued: “Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice. And be ye kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.”

We are certain “exhortations to holiness and love” will dominate the resumed salary talks. Allegations of “corrupt communication” will surely be a thing of the past.

For, lo, it was only last week that the unions flew into a rage after some authorities passed on the rejected pay offer directly to their schools “to avoid any misinterpretation or misrepresentation from the teachers’ side”.
