Searching for answers

Looking for a way to get pupils engaged with algebra? Eam_larkin has contributed “Algebra Simplifying Trail”, a puzzling treasure hunt for which finding the answer is not just about solving the problem.

What is it?

A series of cards. Teachers are advised to laminate one pack for everyday use and display another on an interactive whiteboard for reference. Pupils have to solve the equations on their worksheet, note the matching symbol for their answer, then search the school grounds to find both the number and corresponding image.

How can it be used?

Develop teamworking skills and the group dynamic while assessing pupils’ algebraic ability. It’s a creative, fun activity for an end-of-day class that encourages pupils to become independent learners.

What do teachers say?

The treasure hunt comes highly recommended by TES Resources users. Leebelee says: “Have used this in Years 6 to 8... kept them coming back for more.”
