It is not strictly true that no child grows taller as a result of being measured (Letters, TES, March 15). There are limited techniques for improving growth - and it is, of course, nowhere near true that measurement of eyesight or hearing does not lead to improvements where deficiencies are detected.
It therefore seems at least possible that measurement of teachers, heads, schools and standards might lead to an improvement in performance: this is, after all, no more than the formative assessment we use on pupils.
Doctor Matthews’ letter lacks logic, and her simile does not work. I wonder what she is a doctor of?
