Men are being put off teaching by fear of being labelled as paedophiles, a union has warned. The Ulster Teachers Union, which has 6,700 members in Northern Ireland, discussed a shortage of male applicants at its annual conference in Newcastle, County Down.

Audrey Stewart, president, said male teachers were “an endangered species”.

There is only one male teacher at Olderfleet primary in Larne, where Ms Stewart is principal, and just 71 of the 596 training at Stranmillis university college to work in primary schools are men.
