Merit in merger

29th April 2005, 1:00am
To Northern Ireland, where principals are soon to be fewer in number as news leaks out about a planned merger programme which will see most of them losing their posts.

Something of a shame, considering most of them think they are pretty good at their jobs - although, I hear, Ulster’s Department for Education and Learning is not quite so sure.

A mole tells me that 13 of the 17 principals applied for a merit increase for the year 200304.

And exactly how many ofthese requests were granted?Er, none!

Never mind. No doubt there will be big pay rises for those still in their jobs after the mergers.
