Midnight toil

13th February 1998, 12:00am
Having not left school until midnight on Friday, after returning from the National Theatre’s production of Peter Pan with a coachload of Year 7 students, then having got up early on Saturday morning to drive 130 miles to Yorkshire for a day’s (unpaid) meeting of my subject association, I was unable to read The TES until the Sunday morning, prior to spending the rest of the day doing necessary marking and preparation for the coming week’s lessons.

On the front page (January 23), I find Stephen Byers reported as informing the Society of Education Officers’ conference that the Government is considering putting “extra demands on teachers to work in the evening, early in the morning, at the weekend”.

Extra demands?
