On the misuse of psychometrics

27th April 2012, 1:00am

As a former head, now working as a consultant, I was alarmed to read about Michael Gove’s intended use of psychometrics on the National Professional Qualification for Headship (“Prospective leaders need their heads examined”, 13 April).

The importance of using the most appropriate instrument for each situation is crucial, and some of those imported from commerce and industry now seen in use in education fail to deliver the outcomes for which they are being put to use.

We must urge Mr Gove not only to make the right choices but also to rethink the method of delivering psychometric outcomes.
