* Draw attention to the dangers of “false friends”. The word “pants” has different meanings in Britain and the US, the French “slip” bears no resemblance to a petticoat and brassi re is a baby garment.

* Use the history of fashion, including underwear, to raise awareness of our European heritage. It could also serve as a springboard for work on tenses, adjectives and comparisons, particularly appropriate in Italian and French studies.

* Chart how the role of women has evolved in the target language country since the bra-burning Sixties. Compare this with the situation in the UK.
