Modern foreign languages - Learning beyond school

16th September 2011, 1:00am

Going up a level with an HE taster

Language will break free of the classroom at Nottingham Trent University on 26 September, when up to 80 Year 10 pupils will have the chance to experience a taste of what language has to offer.

There’s the Language Roundabout of Amazing Things, which includes a Japanese, Mandarin or Arabic language sample session, and a How to Stay Safe in Difficult Situations self-defence class, where pupils will be given handy phrases in Spanish, French and German. The day will end with a pinata party and a Euro millionaire quiz.

The free event has been organised by East Midlands Routes into Languages, together with academics from the Languages and International Studies department at the university, and can accommodate about six schools with 13 places each.

There will also be a chance to speak to Nottingham Trent University international students about their home countries.
