Nearly a third of infants are now taught in classes of under 25 and the number of infants taught in classes over 30 has been cut from 29 per cent to 2 per cent since 1998 said schools standards minister Estelle Morris.

Ms Morris added that the number of classroom assistants as also increased from 54,100 to 68,700, bringing the child:adult ratio in infant classes to 17.2.

Teacher unions have now called for the Government to target class sizes in secondary schools where the pupil:teacher ratios have worsened since Labour came to power.
