The explosion in demand for business, management and computer skills in the 1990s are reflected in the popularity of such courses at university. These, along with traditional professions like medicine and law, occupy the top places in the list below. Software engineering and computing are the courses gaining most rapidly in popularity. The final column shows which courses are the easiest to get on to. Intriguingly, while medicine is hardest of all, with almost 12 people chasing every place, competition for primary teacher training is almost as great.
