The Government’s Audit Unit, which is at the heart of the push to improve standards in schools, is to have a new head. Frank Crawford, who is promoted to chief inspector from district inspector in the west of Scotland, has been working with the unit on target-setting initiatives.
Archie McGlynn, who led the unit for seven years and introduced teachers to such notions as school self-evaluation and performance indicators, takes the post of chief inspector in the east of Scotland held at present by Harvey Stalker.
Mr Stalker assumes responsibility for the wide-ranging areas of teacher education, international relations, research and technology. These have been the remits of Martyn Roebuck, who retires at the end of next month.
