Anti-Bullying Week

Pupils are being asked to think about difference and belonging to mark this year’s Anti-Bullying Week: November 17-21. The event will encourage pupils to consider the causes of prejudice and how difference is often at the root of bullying. It will be launched with an address by Ed Balls, the Schools Secretary, and will be supported by Paralympian gold-medallist swimmer David Roberts and Hollyoaks actor Garnon Davies, who will both speak about their own experiences of bullying.

Wellbeing conference

International organisations will look at how to achieve children’s wellbeing this week. Eurochild, a network of 160 participants from 23 European countries, will meet in Budapest to discuss how to guarantee children’s rights and happiness. The conference will consider how the EU can support governments’ efforts to reduce child poverty and introduce long-term child welfare strategies. It is estimated that some 19 million European children live in poverty.

Sparked up science

A major new event to spark interest in science and engineering was announced this week. The Big Bang, the UK’s first scientists’ and engineers’ fair, will take place in London in March, supported by two government departments and leading science-based firms and lobby groups. The three-day event will include the announcement of the winners of the new National Science Competition, open to 13 to 19-year-olds, which will identify a young scientist and a young technologist of the year.
