Internationally renowned concert violinist Nicola Benedetti (pictured left) will host a live online lesson streamed on the TES website from 10am on Monday 10 November. The lesson, part of the BBC’s Ten Pieces campaign to get children interested in classical music, is aimed at key stage 2 pupils and will include tips drawn from Benedetti’s own career and musical experience. As well as TES, Ten Pieces is working with more than 200 music, dance and arts organisations across the UK in order to bring the project to as many children as possible. Same job, but more pay if you went to private school

Private school students earn more in later life than their state school counterparts, even if they attend the same university and secure the same qualifications, research shows. A study by the Institute for Fiscal Studies, funded by the Nuffield Foundation, finds that workers with the same degree from the same university earn 7 per cent more on average if they attended private school. Former private school students also earn 6 per cent more than their state school colleagues doing the same job. Dr Claire Crawford from the University of Warwick, who carried out the research, said there was a “pressing need to understand why private schooling confers such an advantage in the labour market”. Minister pledges pound;2m to fight homophobic bullying

Charities funded by the government will be sent into schools to educate teachers and students on the detrimental effects of homophobic bullying, it has been announced. Education secretary Nicky Morgan is funding a pound;2 million programme in which charities and voluntary groups will run projects on the harm caused by bullying to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people. “Homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying affects everyone, not just young LGBT people,” Ms Morgan said. “Any young person who is different can find themselves subjected to distressing and intimidating homophobic abuse.”

UN seeks end to `market-driven’ school reforms

Governments are bypassing their “moral imperative” to provide free state education by outsourcing public schooling to profit-making companies, a UN report says. States should remain primarily responsible for providing free and quality basic education to all, it claims, and not allow their education systems to be exploited by private companies “reaping uncontrolled profits”. The report calls for countries to put an end to “market-driven education reforms” that provide subsidies to private education. States should also not allow or promote low-cost private schools and the provision of school vouchers, it insists.
