Language teachers across Europe are failing to take advantage of social networking and even see the phenomenon as a threat to their classroom authority, according to a major international study. Commissioned by the EU’s Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency, the study was carried out in eight EU countries. Anne Stevens, a senior lecturer at the Open University’s faculty of education and language studies, who led the research, commented: “It is not being used beneficially by teachers. The fact that pupils are using languages in their usage of these sites is not being taken advantage of.”
