Assessment for Learning is taught "no better than satisfactorily" in two-thirds of schools, despite being given a priority by the National Strategies, Ofsted said today. The inspectorate found that the technique, in which teachers check on pupils' understanding and use the information to help them improve, was well-taught in 16 of the 43 schools it examined, but "inadequate" in seven. Primary schools were better than secondaries. Where it was badly taught, teachers did not understand how it could improve achievement, said Ofsted's report.
