Omnibus omitted

29th September 2000, 1:00am
WITH an Office for Standards in Education inspection coming up, I have read the team’s CVs and am mystified by the “lay” inspector.

He has carried out more than 100 inspections, is a founder chairman of a dyslexia support group, has organised summer schools and teacher-training and has comprehensive knowledge of the 1981 Education ActCode of Practice. How “lay” is this?

Whatever happened to the person on the Clapham omnibus or is OFSTED so entrenchedin its own agenda that it is unwilling to incorporate the views of ordinary members of the public?

If the legal system can respect the views of “12 good men and true”, why does OFSTED insist on including people who, al-though not teacher-trained, are heavily involved in the education process? They cannot come in to schools and cast a fresh and dispassionate eye on what goes on.
