ED Blundell has been appointed as Stockport’s new director for education services. He takes over from Kathy August, who becomes head of Manchester’s new City Academy. Mr Blundell graduated from Leeds University and taught English in secondary and further eduction. He joined Stockport in 1975 as one of the country’s youngest advisers for further and adult education.

Edward Mitchell, head of Abbey Gate College, Chester since 1991, is the new chairman of the Society of Headmasters and Headmistresses of Independent Schools for this year. The society, with 90-plus member schools, is one of the five professional associations of heads in the Independent Schools Council.

Pauline Davies, head of Wycombe Abbey school, Buckinghamshire, is the new president of the Girls’ School Association. Mrs Davies, a graduate of Manchester University, taught in the state sector before becoming head of Croydon high school until 1998. The GSA is also a member of the ISC, as is the Independent Schools Association, which has just appointed Michael Hewett, head of The Old School, Henstead, Suffolk, as its chairman. Mr Hewett has been in his present post for 16 years.
