PEOPLE Gordon Conway, vice-chancellor of Sussex University, has been appointed president of the Rockefeller Foundation, New York, a private foundation dedicated to improving the well-being and education of people throughout the world. Professor Conway is the first non-US citizen to hold the post.

Mahendra Savjani, formerly deputy head of The Copland Community School, London Borough of Brent, has been appointed head of The Swaminarayan School, Neasden, London NW10.

Goldsmiths College, University of London, has awarded honorary degrees and fellowships to: Lord Lloyd Webber, composer (doctor of music); Stuart Hall, professor of sociology, Open University, and visiting professor in Goldsmiths’ media and communications department (doctor of literature); and Keith Ajegbo OBE, head of Deptford Green School (fellowship).
