Bryan Slater, assistant chief education officer for Devon, will become director of education for Norfolk in November when Michael Edwards retires after 18 years as county education officer.

Kathryn August, formerly head of Priestnall Secondary School, Stockport, is now director of education, arts and leisure for the re-organised Trafford Council.

Penny Egan, programme development director, Royal Society of Arts, will become director of the society in January 1998, the first woman in its 243-year history to hold the post.She replaces acting director James Sandison.

Bernard Barker has come out of retirement to become head of Rowley Fields Community College, Leicester, for a two-year period. He retired as principal of Stanground College, Peterborough, last March after 17 years in the post.

Paul Cann, executive director of the British Dyslexia Association, has been appointed chief executive of the National Autistic Society from November 3.Jane Asher, actress and author, is to be president of the society.
