Playing percussion

18th November 2005, 12:00am
There are some delightfully spontaneous colour photographs in Making Music, a new edition of the guide to simple percussion instruments for children aged three and upwards. Six small friends pick up triangles and conga drums, wind chimes and bongos, and play around with them.

Sometimes they look uncertain or get it wrong; one tries to blow the cabassa. Others are more accomplished. The rhyming text offers a gentle (though slightly inexact) commentary on what Jatalya, Paige, Fabian and co are up to. It should lead to fruitful discussion and plenty of practical experiment.
