While in sympathy with the view that assessment is becoming more important than education itself, I feel that Mr Carding (TES, June 15) is suggesting a dangerous course of action. “Bog standard” comprehensive teachers are desperately needed to mark papers. Unless they volunteer, they will be replaced by “assessors” who last taught, if they ever taught an ordinary pupil, light years ago. Yes, we need to change. But, in the meantime, I would prefer that the papers my students have just sat were marked by real teachers.
